In our last post, we talked about the Best Buddies organization and our support of some of the Best Buddies fundraising events in our area. Today, we want to talk about their jobs program, I’m In To Hire, and introduce you to the excellent employees we’ve found through the program.
I’m In To Hire is part of Best Buddies’ three pronged approach to reconnecting the lives and talents of the millions of people with IDD to general society. Isolation from people and work is a real issue for folks with IDD, and Best Buddies is addressing it with a combination of programs designed to increase awareness about the situation and offer practical solutions.
A staggering 85% of the 5 million adults with IDD in our country cannot find meaningful paid work. This comes at a high cost to business, as well as the individuals who aren’t working, and is often a result of hiring prejudice based on a misunderstanding of what it means to have IDD or to employ people with IDD.
I’m In To Hire is Best Buddies’ exciting new business network and career program that challenges misconceptions.
It matches companies with highly qualified employees they can count on, and provides onsite support to help employers find solutions to their needs and get the new hires up and running.
We’re having an excellent experience and are happy to be one of many U.S. companies who have Best Buddies employees—and not just because we found a useful resource for our business and some excellent employees. The benefits of the program go beyond increased productivity for us. Taking part in I’m In To Hire has also helped us make our company more inclusive and aware, which is an important part of our hiring mission.
It doesn’t hurt that we’ve found some really great people. Jumeesha and Anthony are both regular employees and important members of our staff. Unfortunately, Jumeesha wasn’t scheduled on the day we put this post together, so she couldn’t get in the shot with Anthony and John (above). But we’ll catch up with Jumeesha another time.
Our next post or two will give Anthony and Jumeesha a chance to talk about the program themselves and share their experiences working here at Fazenda. You’ll enjoy meeting them; we love working with them.
